Robin Buss (with afro) at Hallowe'en

Robin Buss is a 19-year-old (B&M Models) who recently arrived in Hong Kong to start her international career. The 176 cm (5'9") model is in Asia for the first time in her life and has kindly agreed to provide modelresource readers with occassional updates on her experience.

My Last Week. I am leaving Hong Kong on Monday, and I have so many mixed emotions running through me. I am so happy and exited to return to my beloved family, friends and boyfriend, and yet, I also feel the tug of leaving my new found home. That's really what Hong Kong has become...a home to me.

I have fallen in love with this city. There is something magical about Hong Kong, something that I wasn't expecting, but it truly took me by surprise. I have only met very kind, hospitable people. The models have not been bitchy or catty in any way (a huge relief! That was something I worried about). Baby Blue has treated me with the same love and respect that I appreciate from my Toronto agency, B&M. I worked a very satisfying amount, doing many different types of jobs. I learned a lot about myself, how to function on my own, how to adapt to a new market, and to a different culture than my own. And honestly, I know that I will return to Hong Kong, and love it even more. This bustling, crazy, mixed up city is enchanting in its own way.

My last couple of jobs have been fun and easy. I had a fashion show for Callaway, a big Golfing brand. There was a mix up about hair and make up; we thought it would be provided, but we were supposed to have done it ourselves. At first we were all very worried, but between the models and the really nice girls organizing the show, there was enough beauty products to transform us from blank slates to runway beauties. It was a very interesting experience, I learned how to use my slightly too dark powder make up in a way that gently contoured my cheeks and face (thank you art classes!!) I was really surprised and impressed at how far a little creativity can go!

More Hallowe'en fun
This past Monday, I did promotional work for yet another property developer, again, very easy work. The thing I like about promo work is that in my experience, the client will tell you exactly what they want from you (and it usually involves a big smile!). It makes such a big difference when there is open communication between model and client. Sometimes, particularly for a photo shoot, there is so much I could do, so many looks I could give the camera, but if the client talks to me about what the shot should look like, or what mood they want to create, it makes my job much easier. And for any model who does not receive instruction, ask. In my experience, it helps a lot to know what the client is looking for.

I have not had any difficulty with communication in Hong Kong. Enough people on set (if not everyone) speak English, so I have always been able to understand the client and director. The Catalogue job I did in Shen Zen, China a little while ago was the only place where I noticed a decrease in the quality of English, but even then I could understand the creative director. At some level, the model must also be somewhat intuitive to the direction of the stylist.

Runway is still probably my favourite work, and I am very pleased that my last job here will be a Levi's fashion show. I've worked with Levi's a number of times in Toronto, and it brings a smile to my face that I will conclude my work experience here with something I truly love. When I walk down that runway, everything else fades away. All the small pieces that I have to keep track of, swing hips, cross steps, relax face, steady... it all fades into one shining performance. I love that process!

Just a few more days, and I will be back in Toronto; I am so happy to be returning to my beloved T-DOT! I feel like I will be coming home a new person. I feel stronger and more confident with my work, and more capable as a model and person. This Hong Kong experience has been a blessing, I can't wait to see what positive outcomes arise out of this development of my being!
