Rebecca Dunham as a blonde

Do Blondes Have More Fun?
Ever since I was a little girl I have loved to dress up. Becoming someone else
for a few hours has always held a certain fascination for me. So much so that
although my birthday is in November, I used to always have Halloween costume-themed birthday parties. I guess this fascination has played a role in leading
me down the path to modelling. There isn't an abundance of career options for
the little girl who once told her father that she wants to be a butterfly when she
grows up. Modelling is one of the few jobs that allow you to walk in someone
else's shoes for a few hours, literally and figuratively. While I don't really know
who these people in the images I'm creating are, I get to use my imagination and
create an entire character with a talented team of people. That's why I love doing
photo shoots. It allows me to express my creativity more than walking down a
runway. I get to become the image our team creates, and sometimes it is so far
from who I am and even what I look like.
Recently I shot for Digital SLR magazine here in Malaysia. I arrived on set to see
the makeup artist unpacking a huge variety of blonde wigs, twigs, flowers and
small trinkets. Like a kid in a candy shop my eyes widened. Quickly the team
proved to me that they were some of the best in Malaysia. The makeup artist
knew all about shading and creating masterpieces of wig and dollar store flowers
and trinkets on my head. The photographer shot each look in a matter of 10-15
minutes, moving me back into hair and makeup.
The prospect of being blonde for a day was too delicious, but not as delicious as
the different types of blonde girl I got to be. The wigs ranged from a pixie cut to
my last wig, which was a chestnut brown wig, curled and twirled to perfection.
The day went off without a hitch, and the cherry on top is that when I went
to buy the magazine this month, I saw my blonde self on the cover. My first
cover! Granted I am a blonde in it but that's what being a model is all about;
transformation. Days like that one really make me feel like I've transformed into
a butterfly, and allow me to come out of my cocoon and become something
beautiful, mysterious and new -- growing up and out of my confused younger
self into a modelling career that allows me to be who I always wanted to be.
No, modelling doesn't always inspire me to be confident and secure, but it has
allowed me to step out of my shell and sometimes right into a blonde wig.
