During a campaign shoot with Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel Allure, the legendary designer once told Yasmin, "What I hate most in life are people who are not really the peach of the day, but who want to be young and sexy. You can fool nobody. There is a moment when you have to accept that somebody else is younger and fresher and hotter. Life is not a beauty contest."
Words that Yasmin took to heart; words that she lives by.
Yasmin Abshir Warsame was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, and immigrated to Toronto, Ontario as a refugee when she was 15 years old.
Although she flirted with modelling off and on, it wasn't until she was in her early twenties that she was offered a booking for Sears, and continued doing catalogue work as her primary modelling income.
It was after signing with Next, three years later, that her career really took off, first storming the shows at New York fashion week, and subsequently being photographed by Steven Meisel for Vogue Italia.
Campaigns followed for some of the fashion industry's heaviest hitters, like Revlon, Dolce & Gabanna, Escada, Chanel Allure, Gap and H&M. Those, along with magazine editorials for the likes of Vogue Italia, American Vogue, Elle, Amica, Jane and Surface, and an impressive list of both couture and ready-to-wear runways have established Warsame as one of the most successful Canadian models of all time.
Despite her international success, Warsame maintains her home in Toronto, and was named the "Most Alluring Canadian" in a 2004 poll by Fashion Magazine.
Warsame was added to the judging panel of the reality show Canada's Next Top Model - Season II, and will return for Season III. It's an opportunity she describes as an incredible experience to help the girls through their first steps and build their confidence, not only as models, but as people.
Warsame studied psychology and Social Sciences at Seneca College, and from time to time continues to volunteer for the Somali Youth Coalition in Canada.
A Taurus who is proud to admit that her favourite Beatle is John Lennon, loves the movie The Dark Knight, and will also be found listening to the music of Danity Kane, she also loves travelling and reading, but most importantly her son.
No matter how you look at her, Yasmin Warsame is an icon to the modelling world and to all of those that admire her class and style.
