You know Karolina Kurkova. That's her on the right. One of the highest grossing models in recent years, the 22-year-old is a fixture at the annual Victoria's Secret fashion show and was named the Vogue/VH1 Model of the Year in 2002. Easily one of the most recognized models on the planet, of course you know Karolina Kurkova. But would you know Karolina Kurkova if it wasn't for Trudi Tapscott?
A legend in this industry, Trudi Tapscott spent six years as American Vogue's Booking Editor. Hers was the job to recruit the teams that made editorials come to life. Hers was the charge to pick the models that would collect some of the most lucrative tears in the business, and many believe it was her involvement that started the Czech model on the path to where she is today.
The pair met in 2000, when Kurkova was just 15-years-old. It's said that Tapscott recognized her potential immediately, and Vogue started a working relationship that would see Kurkova gracing the cover of the magazine's February 2001 issue. From there Kurkova has gone on to appear on more than 80 covers worldwide, appeared on runways too numerous to mention and signed contracts with the likes of Ralph Lauren, Óscar de la Renta, Chanel and Balenciaga.
It was Tapscott's reputation for spotting potential that brought her to Vogue in the first place. Prior to taking the position as Booking Editor she had been a founding member of Model Search America - one of the world's largest model scouting firms. Before that she spent seven years scouting for Elite. "That's what makes our professions so interesting," she told Modelresource recently during a scouting trip to Toronto, "is the layers of experience people bring to it."
Vogue, of course, added additional layers to what was already a very deep understanding of the business. "It's an amazing opportunity to work with such a powerful woman as [Vogue's Editor] Anna Wintour, or to be so instrumental in the development of Karolina Kurkova, and cultivating that relationship. And what I took from it was a tremendous working experience."
Since 2005 Tapscott been with New York's DNA Models where she guides some of the most iconic careers in the business, like those of Linda Evangelista, Natalia Vodianova, Agyness Deyn, Hana Soukupova, Missy Rayder and yes, Karolina Kurkova.
