What photographers have influenced you and how?
There are many photographers whose work I admire: Paolo Roversi, Sally Mann, Peter Lindbergh to name a few. I wouldn't say that their work, or the work of any other photographer, has profoundly influenced mine though. Perhaps shamefully, I rarely look at other work. I generally am inspired more by nature, light and the energy of the model and crew.

Did you have a moment when you realized, within yourself, that you were skilled enough to do this for a living and if so when was that or what was it like?
My friend and I took pictures of each other in a field when we were 19 years old. When we got the pictures back from the lab, I was like, "Hey, these are pretty good."

What inspires you to continue shooting and how do you keep motivated when a certain shot or moment just doesn't happen?
Make a little change. Look around, see what your options are. I used to get really upset by getting stuck... I've learned that you can almost always find a solution... sometimes it just takes a lot longer and you have to have the patience to let it work itself through.

As a photographer (and sometimes art director!), where do you find your own artistic inspiration?
I ride my horse everyday that I'm not shooting and that recharges me. I am so happy at the stable, it helps me be creative.

What do you love most about this career?
Everything. Every time I finish a shoot, I have this moment of being so grateful. It is so much fun, it's so creative, you work with other inspired people, you travel...

What is your favourite shoot to date?
A shoot a few years ago in the Poconos stands out for me. Models were amazing, the clothes, the locations. It was so cold out that we had to find something indoors kind of quickly; suddenly there was this old run down hotel with paint peeling and beautiful old furniture and the the whole place was ours. Serendipity!

If you couldn't be a photographer, what would you be?
A really bad horse trainer (if my horse is any indication)

What advice would you give young people starting out in today's market?
Learn how to do it properly. Digital makes it easy to shoot, but you still have to have it down technically to make things really work.
