Be Fit, Fabulous & Successful This Fall

Jadine Cleary

So by now you are over the initial shock of the busyness of fall. It's an exciting and a trying time as you work hard to achieve all of your goals and honour every commitment, from working out, to attending castings & photo shoots, school work, friends & family commitments - and then if you have a significant other - how to fit it all in?

Very quickly we can feel overwhelmed, tired and incapable of handling everything - and we can slip in terms of achieving our goals.

You can't do it all, but you can do what's important, and do that well.

Follow these strategies and you will have your happiest, and most productive fall season ever.

1. Get your sleep!

I know, I know you've heard this before. How do you get everything done and then also get the amount of sleep you need? More on how to do that later... however I'm bringing up sleep first, as it needs to be a PRIORITY.

When you get more sleep (7-8 hrs a night) everything in your world will go better.

You will be more capable of dealing with small obstacles, your cortisol levels will be lower (a stress hormone that when elevated causes you to store more fat) and you will be more effective at everything you do. Not to mention you will look and photograph better. Michelle Pfeiffer credits the longevity of her looks to getting a minimum of eight hours of sleep every night.

If you need more reasons to get more shut-eye, you might be interested in a recent study from Québec where they followed 750 women for ten years. Those who got 7-8 hrs of sleep a night were on average eleven pounds lighter than those who logged less.

Shut off that TV or computer, and get to sleep!

2. Keep your Priorities Straight

By this I mean "Keep your Eye on the Prize."

What are you aiming for? And what do you need to do to achieve it?

If you want good grades, need to maintain or improve your physique, and make an impression at castings and jobs, you need to make sure these priorities stay at the top of your list. They need to receive the bulk of your energy and time. If you have an exam and a casting on Friday, do you really have time to watch that extra hour of TV or go out with friends on Thursday??

I'm all for having a social life, but not at the expense of what you've determined is important. At the end of the day YOU are in charge of making what you want to happen in your life... And YOU get the REWARDS!!

Acknowledging priorities also means adjusting as things come up or change in your life. It is OK to do this. If the studying isn't going as you had hoped, maybe you need to adjust your plans and spend more time on school.

Accept that life is constantly changing, you need to be smart and adjust as needed.

3. Look out for YOU!

Cut out things and or people who get in the way of you achieving your goals.

This is different than just keeping your priorities straight. I am talking about protecting yourself and your limited time and energy from activities or people who don't understand what you want and need from your life.

I don't mean for you to be so selfish that no one wants to be around you.

But I want you to ask yourself... what is important to me???

What do I need for me to succeed?

Life can get overwhelming in a hurry, especially when you are juggling school and modelling.

You need to know where the most important focus is for your energy and time - and make that happen.

When a friend asks you to coffee, but she always only talks about herself and you're really quite fed up with hearing her talk about the boyfriend who's a jerk (but who she always goes back to...), it's OK and healthy to decide not to see her. Have a ten minute phone conversation with her instead of a two hour coffee and do your workout instead.

Know the people who give you energy in life and those who drain it.

Honour those who are supportive of your goals and aspirations and don't give in to those who don't understand, or who sabotage your efforts at being fabulous.

4. Exercise

I am saying this for a number of reasons. You need to be in shape for modelling, but also because exercise:

  • decreases stress hormones
  • increases immunity, so you don't get sick
  • reduces your appetite
  • burns calories!

You don't have to run a marathon for these rewards either. Getting 20-30 minutes 4X per week is great. Don't make the mistake of not going because you can't go for an hour. In this category, something is always better than nothing!
