Recently the high profile Dove Campaign for Real Beauty has forced the public to confront issues related to perceptions of body image. It has come under fire from some however, because it tells girls to embrace their appearance, while selling them products to improve it. Their Intense Firming Lotion for example, boasts that it "visibly firms and smoothes skin's appearance." (Modelresource's attempt to reach Dove's parent company, Unilever Canada, to explain the seemingly contradictory message went unreturned)
Windischmann feels the Dove campaign is positive however, because regardless of the message, it is making people talk. "You can have an art gallery and spend a lot of money on a controversial piece of art. But whether you love it or hate it, it's in the media and being talked about. If it's stirring up controversy, great... at least it's stirring up conversation that wasn't there before."
She also feels a greater awareness of different types of beauty can only benefit the modelling world. "As an industry we're getting to a point where it's getting cool for girls to think about it. I just hope that continues to send to send out a positive message to youth and to women that you can be all sizes and shapes and be a professional model and make a living at it.
"Some people don't realize how much of your work as a professional goes into it. A lot of people think anybody could do it. My thought is, there are a lot of people who can try for a few years and fail - I've been a professional for 13 years now, so I must be doing something right.
"It's not a job - it's a career. A lot of people see it as you're just lucky to get into it. You may be lucky to get into it, but you have to be smart to make it a career."
